About Durham

The Regional Municipality of Durham is east of Toronto, in the Golden Horseshoe area of Ontario. It is a mix of rural, residential, and commercial land. North Durham is mostly rural, has a thriving agriculture sector, and is home to the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The region stretches from Pickering in the west, Newtonville in the east, Lake Ontario in the south, and as far north as Lake Simcoe.

It has an area of approximately 2,500 square kilometres. Headquarters of the regional government is in Whitby. The Region of Durham was established in 1974 as one of several new regional governments in Ontario.

Durham Region was originally the home of a number of First Nations including, but not limited to Iroquois and Ojibway. The first immigrants to this area were French followed by English explorers and settlers during the 1600s and 1700s. These early immigrants created a demand for furs to export to France and England and other parts of Europe. During the 1800’s local business began setting up. One of the major manufacturing companies in Durham was the McLaughlin Carriage Company which would later become General Motors of Canada.

In the 1900s many immigrants came from Britain and Europe and settled in this area to take up jobs in the factories, foundries and businesses that became the commercial and business base of Durham Region. Immigrants of Polish, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Croatian, German, Italian and Russian heritage made Oshawa their home during this period.

Now Durham region is a thriving region with over 3,000 businesses in the key economic sectors such as agri-business, energy, environment, engineering, health sciences, innovative technology, manufacturing and tourism.

A big landmark within the region is the Pickering Nuclear Power Plant. Located on the shores of Lake Ontario just east of Toronto and nestled in the community of Pickering is one of the world’s largest nuclear generating facilities. Pickering Nuclear has six operating CANDU® (CANadian Deuterium Uranium) reactors. The station has a total output of 3,100 megawatts (MW) which is enough to serve a city of one and a half million people, and about 14 per cent of Ontario’s electricity needs.

Durham is more than business. During the summer the Downtown Oshawa presents “Bikes on Bond” which takes place on Saturday, 10 August. Turning into one of the largest motorcycle events in the province, motorcycle riders come together in Oshawa and spend the day in downtown displaying bikes and interacting with the crowds. This show offers: Live entertainment, vendors, dealers and the ever popular Show and Shine.

Transit

The Durham Region is serviced by various transportation systems, making it easy to travel in and out of the area. Durham Regional Transit is the local public transportation service, which can take you throughout the region. There is also access to GO Transit and VIA Rail. Many of the communities here are also bike-friendly.
