About Richmond Hill

“A little north, a little nicer” is the unofficial motto for Richmond Hill, Ontario. The Town’s development was closely linked with the development of Yonge Street, which was planned primarily as a military road by John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Upper Canada. Named after the Duke of Richmond, the town was officially incorporated on June 18, 1872, as a village.

Richmond Hill developed because of its proximity to Toronto, as farmers came into town on their way to Toronto markets and people travelled up and down Yonge Street to and from communities further north.

Early in the twentieth century, several rose-growing greenhouses were built and the town was named the “rose capital” of Canada. The town has since modernized and is now part of Canada’s largest technology cluster, and also a pioneer in the four key business sectors (Scientific and Technical Services, Health Industry, Finance and Insurance, and Information and Cultural Industries).

Many head offices are situated in Richmond Hill. Some notable companies include Compugen, TigerDirect.ca, Amico, Johnson Controls, The Business Exchange, BMW, Mazda, Volvo, Crocs, Levi’s and Staples.

Visitors to Richmond Hill have many options to consider when deciding what to do. The ever-popular Ribfest, which takes place annually during the last week of July, is a three-day outdoor festival that features professional rib teams travelling to Richmond Hill from across North America. Ribbers cook and compete for various Best titles including Best Sauce and Best Ribs as decided by honorary judges.

For those who like to see the stars. The David Dunlap Observatory (DDO) is a unique experience. Since opening its doors in 1935 the observatory has been a research centre for the University of Toronto’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and a facility for public education and outreach. On September 29, 2009, Richmond Hill Council designated the DDO Property as a “property of cultural heritage value or interest”
